Participants will hear from the lead defense attorney, Davi Tangerino about the Banco Masters Scandal, the largest legal/political investigation into the CEO’s of two of the largest banks in Brazil, Banco Master and Bank Regional Brazilia (BRB), and their business dealings which lead to investigations into some of the highest ranking government officials and Justices in Brazil and its impact on the Rule of Law, Democracy and the Independence of the Judiciary. We will use this case to frame a discussion on the global conversation of a lawyer’s role in protecting the rule of law and democracy.
Therapeutic Jurisprudence (TJ) in Practice: Transforming the Legal Profession, Evolving Legal Systems
This panel invites lawyers interested in professional development to explore TJ as a practical, ready-to-apply framework for both personal growth and systemic reform. We will have the opportunity to discuss how legal rules, procedures, and legal professions' roles impact those involved in legal processes, and how they can be shaped to produce more humane outcomes without compromising due process. Attendees will gain practical insight into how being exposed to TJ principles, including TJ in a law firm’s culture and adopting TJ in daily practice can enhance professional effectiveness, deepen sense of purpose, and contribute to more responsive and efficient systems of justice.

Substantively, the session moves from practice self-assessment (identifying AI needs and risks before tool selection) through building internal governance architecture (use policies, attorney supervision under Model Rule 5.3, audit trails, client disclosure, and intake/billing integration), cross-jurisdictional regulatory navigation, and practical implementation strategy, closing with a law practice management segment on AI-ready firms. It is designed to be highly interactive using live polling, small-group exercises, real-world scenario analysis, and Q&A woven throughout, and is intended to serve both first-time, single-jurisdiction practitioners and managing partners of multinational firms.

Since its involvement with the BIC AI project in 2024 and the issuance of the IBA report, the BIC’s working group has been updating and expanding its findings and research. The Working Group report will be issued in 2026, with anticipated recommendations for further commentary to the IBA’s Principles of Conduct for the Profession, as well as guidance for bar associations in issuing their own statements or considering changes to their own ethics rules.
